Apps and Greenways

Oh how I’ve missed Monday Fundays. Luckily the first Monday this December was unseasonably warm. It was a beautiful day – a great day for a bike ride with the original Monday Funday Crew – Will, Rose and Georgia. This time we had a guest appearance from Dan the mountain man (Rose’s friend from western NC.)

I was a bit weary of hopping on a bike for the first time in weeks (many weeks,) but was excited to  check out the new House Creek Greenway as well as try out the new RGreenway App. It was a relief when Will told me that it wouldn’t be too tough of a ride – too bad he lied.  After a nearly 3-hour ride I could barely walk when we first got back to Rose and Georgia’s house in Five Points.

I don’t know exactly how far we biked, but we started in Five Points and made our way to Crabtree and then to the art museum. We even saw part of the CowParade project. Despite having sore legs, it was a lot of fun. Can’t wait until the next ride – It’s always a blast with the Monday Funday Gang.  Enjoy the photos!

Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition

It’s been a hundred years, but the sinking of the world’s largest ship of its time on April 15, 1912 has never been forgotten. The story of the Titanic’s maiden voyage is legendary; now is your chance to experience the wonder and tragedy of the “ship of dreams” right here in Raleigh.

From now until April 28, 2013, Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition will showcase 200 artifacts retrieved from the wreck site of Titanic at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. Museum goers will be able to take on the identity of a real passenger onboard Titanic as they explore re-creations of the ships interior. The purpose of RMS Titanic, Inc. who is conducting the exhibit is to faithfully and respectfully preserve the memory of Titanic and of all who sailed with her. Tickets are on sale now and range from 8 to 14 dollars.

Nature Research Center Grand Opening

To commemorate the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences‘ newest addition, the Nature Research Center in Downtown Raleigh will open its doors to the public for the first time with a 24 hour celebration beginning at 5pm on April 20. Entertainment and activities last through 5pm the next day.

Visitors can explore their inner scientist by checking out the different presenters and exhibitors across two city blocks.  Tours inside the new wing will be offered as well. There will be platy of interactive science and technology exhibits to keep you and the kids busy.

The cornerstone of the NRC will be the SECU Daily Planet, which is an immersive, three-story multimedia space that hosts live programming on current science issues and feature nature films on a giant screen. Other highlights include a 10,000-gallon aquarium with lionfish, bonnethead sharks and Atlantic stingrays, and Investigate Labs, where visitors can perform scientific experiments designed and led by Museum researchers and educators.
