Apps and Greenways

Oh how I’ve missed Monday Fundays. Luckily the first Monday this December was unseasonably warm. It was a beautiful day – a great day for a bike ride with the original Monday Funday Crew – Will, Rose and Georgia. This time we had a guest appearance from Dan the mountain man (Rose’s friend from western NC.)

I was a bit weary of hopping on a bike for the first time in weeks (many weeks,) but was excited to  check out the new House Creek Greenway as well as try out the new RGreenway App. It was a relief when Will told me that it wouldn’t be too tough of a ride – too bad he lied.  After a nearly 3-hour ride I could barely walk when we first got back to Rose and Georgia’s house in Five Points.

I don’t know exactly how far we biked, but we started in Five Points and made our way to Crabtree and then to the art museum. We even saw part of the CowParade project. Despite having sore legs, it was a lot of fun. Can’t wait until the next ride – It’s always a blast with the Monday Funday Gang.  Enjoy the photos!

House Creek Greenway Tour

Curious about the recently opened House Creek Greenway? Well here’s your chance to tour the latest Raleigh greenway with other bike enthusiasts. Following its grand opening a few weeks ago, the DLA is organizing a bike tour of the recently opened House Creek Greenway.

Although its only three miles long, the House Creek Trail provides a major linkage of two greenway systems, creating a continuous greenway that extends a total of 36 miles. Check out this map to see how it connects the Crabtree Greenway to the Reedy Creek Greenway.

The tour has two bike route options:

  • 8 mile route:  The up and back route takes about an hour and will start at Meredith College and travel the length of the House Creek Greenway.
  • 16 mile route: This route takes about 2 hours and will start at Meredith College, travel along the House Creek Greenway and onto the Crabtree Creek Greenway to Shelley Lake, and then return to Meredith College.
The tour starts at 10:30am on Sunday, October 14 at Meredith College. Participants are asked to meet at the entrance to the Reedy Creek Greenway at the corner of Hillsborough and Faircloth Streets.

Neuse River Greenway Opening Soon

The first section of the Neuse River Greenway is set to open this September.  The 8-mile stretch starts from Falls of Neuse Road near the Falls Lake Dam and extends south to the WRAL Soccer Complex.  Once complete, the Neuse River Greenway will run 28 miles from Falls Lake Dam south to the Johnston County Line.  It is set to be completed in early 2013.
